World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called for an end to the ongoing bloodshed in Sudan, following the killing of a doctor in the conflict-ridden city of El-Fasher.
Ghebreyesus said he was “saddened to learn of the killing of Dr. Adam Ibrahim Ismail,” who worked at the Saudi Hospital in El-Fasher.
“The WHO mourns the passing of Dr. Ismail and demands an end to violence against health workers,” he wrote on X, adding, “Sudan’s bloodshed must end.”
He also emphasized that “peace is the best medicine,” calling on all parties to halt the violence.
The city of El-Fasher, located in Sudan’s Darfur region, has seen intense fighting as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control after heavy clashes.
Local and international organizations have reported widespread human rights violations, including ethnic-based massacres and forced displacement of civilians.
Videos shared by RSF members appeared to show armed men targeting unarmed civilians and forcing residents from their homes.
Sudan has been gripped by conflict since April 15, 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the RSF.
The civil war has killed thousands and displaced millions, leaving large parts of the country in a humanitarian crisis.
According to reports, the RSF’s recent advance in Darfur has raised fears of further atrocities and a deepening of the country’s division.
