Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the United States and Iran on Thursday to return to the negotiating table to end their war, according to a report by state-run news agency Xinhua on Xi's closed-door meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House.
Xi told Trump that China "has always maintained that the sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected" and said Beijing had played a constructive role in easing tensions between the two sides and pushing them toward talks.
The Chinese leader said Beijing supports Washington and Tehran returning to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, expressing hope the two sides would resume negotiations as soon as possible.
Xi said he hoped the countries could reach a comprehensive agreement, including on the nuclear issue, and ultimately achieve peace.
Xi also raised the issue of Taiwan, urging the US to "adhere to the correct position of opposing 'Taiwan independence'" and to handle the Taiwan question with caution in order to build a solid foundation for strategic cooperation and broader bilateral relations. He described China's position on protecting its national unity and territorial integrity as "crystal clear."
Taiwan, a self-governed island Beijing claims as its own territory, has long been one of the most sensitive issues in China-US relations, with Washington maintaining unofficial ties with Taipei while officially recognizing Beijing under its "one China" policy.
Xi framed the broader US-China relationship in strategic terms, saying that building ties based on stability is not a short-term or expedient measure. He said the new vision for the relationship marks a step forward in helping the two countries find the right way to coexist.
