Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will attend NATO’s summit in Ankara in July, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said on Friday, confirming Kyiv’s participation after Zelenskyy previously said Ukraine would be represented at the gathering.
Rutte made the announcement while speaking to reporters at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Sweden.
“I invited him already,” Rutte said. “He will be there.”
The NATO summit is set to take place in Türkiye’s capital on July 7-8.
Rutte’s comments clarified the format of Ukraine’s participation after Zelenskyy had earlier said Kyiv would take part in the Ankara summit, but that details were still being arranged.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Zelenskyy said Ukraine would be present at the NATO meeting in Türkiye, according to Interfax-Ukraine.
“Regarding the NATO summit, Ukraine will be represented at the NATO summit in Türkiye,” Zelenskyy said.
“How, in what format, and by whom, it’s too early to say,” he added at the time.
Rutte’s statement on Friday confirmed that Zelenskyy himself is expected to attend.
