Preparations have reportedly begun for pre-commissioning work on the automated process control system of Unit 1 at Türkiye’s Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, marking a stage that precedes the reactor’s physical startup.
Akkuyu Nuclear, a Rosatom subsidiary, said preparations were underway for commissioning activities involving the unit’s automated process control system, or APCS.
The system allows plant personnel to monitor and control technological processes involved in electricity generation at the nuclear facility.
Akkuyu Nuclear said the plant's automated control systems are designed with the high reliability standards applied to Russian-designed nuclear power units.
The safety control system, which automatically activates and manages active safety systems, has a stated failure probability of 10⁻⁵, equivalent to one error in 100,000 years.
The system uses four independent and physically separated channels, while digital modules continuously test their own equipment at intervals of no more than several milliseconds.
The automated process control system for Unit 1 comprises more than 42,000 pieces of equipment, all manufactured to seismic resistance requirements to ensure safe plant operation under a range of conditions.
Akkuyu is Türkiye’s first nuclear power plant.
The project consists of four power units equipped with Russian-designed Generation 3+ VVER reactors, each with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts.
The Akkuyu project is also the first nuclear power plant project globally being implemented under the Build-Own-Operate model.
