Google has announced a major update to its Gmail service, introducing advanced artificial intelligence features designed to assist users in composing emails, summarizing content and managing daily tasks. The update aims to transform Gmail from a traditional email platform into a more proactive, AI-powered productivity tool.

Smarter email composition

The centerpiece of the update is “Help Me Write,” an AI-driven writing assistant that learns a user’s style and provides real-time suggestions for composing and refining messages.

Additionally, AI-powered summaries will allow users to quickly review lengthy email threads, while conversational search capabilities enable subscribers to pose natural-language questions to locate information within their inbox.

AI-powered task management

A new feature, AI Inbox, is being rolled out to a select group of trusted testers in the United States. This tool analyzes emails to highlight tasks, suggest to-do items, and identify topics of potential interest, effectively creating a personalized daily agenda from incoming messages.

Google is rolling out AI Overview conversation summaries to all Gmail users at no cost. The feature that allows users to ask questions of their inbox is available to subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra.

For now, these features are only available in English within the United States, but Google plans to expand both language support and geographic availability later this year. Google has stated that the new AI service will not use personal email content to train its underlying models, and that data within users’ inboxes is protected by a dedicated engineering privacy barrier.
