U.S.-based tech company Meta has relaunched its social media platform Threads in Türkiye, bringing the service back online roughly two years after regulatory action forced its suspension over competition concerns, according to the Turkish Competition Authority Tuesday.

The return follows changes requested by the authority, which had raised concerns over Meta's practice of linking Threads to Instagram and combining user data across platforms.

The dispute began in 2024, when the Competition Authority imposed an interim measure on Meta over concerns that the data-sharing arrangement could harm competition. Meta was later fined for failing to fully comply with the measure.

New account options, data separation introduced

Under the revised system, users no longer need an Instagram profile to access Threads.

People can continue signing in through their existing Instagram accounts, but they also have the option of creating a standalone Threads account using only a phone number. The new setup allows users to join the platform independently of Instagram.

The Competition Authority said the changes give users greater control over their personal data.

For those who choose to use Threads separately, information collected on the platform will not be merged with data gathered through Meta's other services. The regulator said the arrangement addresses concerns surrounding cross-platform data sharing.

What is Threads?

Launched by Meta in July 2023, Threads is a text-focused social media platform designed to compete with X, formerly known as Twitter.

Built by Instagram's team, the service allows users to share short text posts, photos, videos and links, while following and interacting with other accounts through replies, reposts and likes.

Threads was initially tied closely to Instagram, allowing users to sign up using their Instagram credentials and carry over their usernames and existing networks.

The platform became one of the fastest-growing social media apps after its launch, surpassing 100 million users within days.

Meta announced earlier this month that Threads had reached 500 million monthly active users globally and introduced new community-focused features as it continues to expand the platform.
