Trabzon is seeing a surge in Egyptian visitors, with overnight stays by Egyptian nationals up sharply in the first eight months of the year compared to the same period in 2025, provincial tourism officials report, a trend that sharpened notably in August.
The number of Egyptian nationals staying overnight in Trabzon was recorded at 4,450 during the January-August period last year, rising to 5,558 during the same period this year. This represents a 25% increase in the number of overnight Egyptian visitors during that period.
Looking at monthly data, the increase became more pronounced in August. The number of Egyptian nationals staying overnight, which stood at 1,151 in August last year, rose to 1,788 in the same month this year, marking a 55% increase compared to the same month a year earlier.
Trabzonspor's signing of Egyptian star footballer Mohamed Salah in August added a new dimension to the city's recognition in Egypt and to tourism interaction between Trabzon and Egypt.
Footage of Salah sampling local dishes in Trabzon being shared on social media boosted interest in the region's gastronomy, while Kurtdere Plateau, which the star footballer visited, has also become one of the most visited spots in the city in recent months.
Improvements in transportation links between Egypt and Trabzon have also supported the rise in tourism activity, with the launch of direct charter flights between Cairo and Trabzon making travel between the two cities easier.
The first flight took place in August, providing direct access from Egypt to Trabzon for the first time.
Provincial Director of Culture and Tourism Tamer Erdogan stated that Trabzon, with its natural beauty and historical and cultural attractions, has long drawn large numbers of visitors, particularly from Gulf countries.
Noting that efforts have been underway in recent years to attract more visitors from different markets, Erdogan said Salah's transfer to Trabzonspor contributed to promoting the city in Egypt.
Pointing out that Salah is a globally recognized footballer, Erdogan said the transfer increased Trabzon's visibility in Egypt, which has had positive effects for tourism.
Emphasizing that Salah's transfer created a significant opportunity, Erdogan said, "With Salah's transfer to Trabzonspor, we are seeing growing interest in Trabzon within Egypt. We want to build on this interest through our tourism efforts to attract more visitors from the Egyptian market."
