TikTok announced a series of updates to its comment section on Friday, introducing voice messages, polls and expanded photo-sharing tools for users.
The company said comments have become central to the platform's culture, with more than 1.7 billion comments shared across TikTok every day.
The new features build on existing tools such as text, photo and video sticker comments.
The first update, called Voice Comments, allows users to record and post audio messages of up to 60 seconds directly under any video. To leave one, users tap the microphone icon in the comment box, and anyone viewing the video can tap to listen to the message.
TikTok said Voice Comments are rolling out globally over the next month to accounts belonging to users 18 and older.
The company also introduced Comment Polls, a feature that lets creators ask their followers to vote on decisions directly in the comment section. Creators can add a poll while commenting on their own video by tapping the poll icon, selecting up to five options and setting a timeframe for voting.
TikTok said creators will be able to track poll results in real time as votes come in. Comment Polls are now available globally.
In addition, TikTok expanded its photo comment options with two new features: Photo Carousel Comments and Live Photo Comments.
Photo Carousel Comments allow users to include up to nine photos in a single comment, rather than just one image. Live Photo Comments let users upload Live Photos, images that include a few seconds of motion, from their camera roll, commenting on a brief moving preview before the full photo is viewed.
TikTok said Live Photo Comments are now available globally, while Photo Carousel Comments will roll out globally over the next month.
