Türkiye and Azerbaijan are moving ahead with plans for three major electricity transmission projects, including an undersea power corridor that will connect the region with Europe, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said.
The projects include an electricity transmission line coming to Türkiye through Nakhchivan, a four-country green energy corridor linking Türkiye, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria, and a transmission line that will run under the Black Sea to Europe, Bayraktar told Anadolu Agency.
The remarks came after the 5th Azerbaijan-Türkiye Energy Forum was held in Baku on Friday, bringing together Bayraktar and Azerbaijan Energy Minister Perviz Shahbazov. Both sides discussed cooperation in hydrocarbons and petrochemicals, energy efficiency, electricity markets, renewable energy, regulation and mining.
The projects form part of a broader push by Türkiye and Azerbaijan to build closer energy ties as global crises become the "new normal," Bayraktar explained, adding that the two countries are developing more predictable, diversified and intensive cooperation in the energy sector.
The minister highlighted that Türkiye and Azerbaijan already cooperate through major energy infrastructure, including the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum natural gas pipeline, TANAP, which carries Azerbaijani gas across Türkiye, and TAP, which extends the route into Europe.
Azerbaijan is a major oil and natural gas producer and is moving toward becoming an electricity producer, while Türkiye is a growing market with rising energy demand, Bayraktar pointed out.
Türkiye also has multiple links with Europe and the capacity to export energy to the continent, making the two countries complementary energy partners, he added.
Türkiye and Azerbaijan are also seeking to make fuller use of existing energy infrastructure, as Bayraktar noted that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline carries 600,000 barrels of oil against its 1 million-barrel capacity.
The countries are looking at ways to bring crude from Central Asia and other Turkic states into the pipeline to make full use of its capacity, while similar work can be pursued for natural gas.
The two countries are also working to expand energy and mining cooperation across the Turkic world. Bayraktar pointed to Turkmenistan’s natural gas resources and Kazakhstan’s oil production and mineral resources, noting that Kazakhstan is also an important uranium supplier.
He said Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and other Turkic states can combine their resources with Türkiye’s industrial base, growing electricity and energy demand, and access to other markets to develop larger joint projects.
