Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that natural gas supplies to Syria launched through a joint initiative by Türkiye and Azerbaijan are contributing to the country’s development and regional stability.
“The contribution of gas supplies to Syria, which began last August as a result of the Türkiye-Azerbaijan joint initiative, to this country’s development and regional security is indisputable,” Erdogan said in a message delivered at the opening of Baku Energy Week.
Erdogan said recent developments in the region had once again highlighted the strategic importance of energy cooperation between Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
He said the two countries had successfully completed a series of major energy projects that were once considered impossible for the region.
Among them, Erdogan cited the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum natural gas pipeline and the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP), which were implemented with Azerbaijan and supported by Georgia.
Erdogan said cooperation had deepened further through partnerships in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli and Shah Deniz energy fields.
He added that the new partnership in the Shafag-Asiman project demonstrates that bilateral energy cooperation continues to expand.
The president also noted that the Igdir-Nakhchivan natural gas pipeline, which entered service last year, has strengthened the energy supply security of Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Erdogan said electricity interconnections between Türkiye and Azerbaijan remain strategically important.
He highlighted the Green Electricity Transmission and Trade Project involving Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Bulgaria, saying it is expected to contribute to the broader region’s energy security.
Addressing regional energy routes, Erdogan said significant opportunities exist to expand cooperation on transporting Turkmen natural gas to international markets through Azerbaijan and Türkiye.
He also noted that the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline is increasingly being used to transport Kazakhstan’s energy resources to Western markets.
Erdogan said Türkiye’s energy strategy aims to ensure effectiveness across all dimensions of the sector, including renewable and green energy, while prioritizing efficiency and environmental sustainability.
He added that Türkiye would continue its efforts to become one of the leading countries in global climate action.
Erdogan also said Türkiye remains committed to hosting the COP31 U.N. climate summit in Antalya on Nov. 9-20.
