Türkiye aims to meet approximately 70% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2040, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said Wednesday, unveiling an ambitious target ahead of the launch of the country's new energy strategy.

The target is part of Türkiye's "National Energy 2040" vision, which outlines plans to transform the country's energy system through expanded renewable energy production, increased electrification and major infrastructure investments.

"Under National Energy 2040, we envisage billions of dollars in investments, from electricity generation to infrastructure," Bayraktar said, according to a statement from the Energy and Natural Resources Ministry.

The minister is scheduled to formally unveil the roadmap Thursday at the Presidential Dolmabahce Working Office in Istanbul, ahead of the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), which will take place in Antalya from Nov. 9-20.

The launch will bring together senior public and private sector executives, representatives of nongovernmental organizations and national and international media organizations.

Türkiye aims to expand renewable energy, reduce foreign dependence

Bayraktar said renewable energy would play a central role in Türkiye's efforts to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imported resources.

"Renewable energy contributes to our supply security while reducing our dependence on foreign sources as a domestic resource. It is also fully aligned with our 2053 net-zero emissions target. In this respect, we have very ambitious goals in renewable energy. By 2040, Türkiye will meet approximately 70% of its energy needs from renewable energy sources," he said.

The minister said the new roadmap had been prepared in response to global developments and Türkiye's future energy requirements.

"In line with the Century of Türkiye vision, we are working toward the goal of a 'Fully Energy-Independent Türkiye.' Achieving full energy independence requires us to transform the entire system together, from production and transmission to distribution and consumption," Bayraktar said.

Electrification to drive energy transformation

Bayraktar said rising electricity demand would make electrification a central component of the new energy strategy, with electricity playing a greater role across major sectors of the economy.

"Electricity demand is increasing in our country, as it is around the world. In this context, electrification will be at the center of our new energy architecture. We are entering a new era in which electricity use will increase across all sectors of our economy, from industry and transportation to buildings and agriculture. We will increase electrification in every sector," he said.

He emphasized that growing electricity consumption and changes in energy markets would require corresponding investments in the country's energy infrastructure.

The National Energy 2040 vision is expected to outline the investments and structural changes needed to support that transformation.

Türkiye to present new energy targets at COP31

Bayraktar said Türkiye would share the targets under its new energy strategy with international counterparts during COP31 in Antalya.

"We will also share the ambitious targets we announce at the launch with our counterparts in Antalya. We will explain the more resilient, more flexible and more secure energy system we will establish. We will also emphasize the importance of connectivity at the regional and global levels," he said.

The minister said the strategy would address not only Türkiye's domestic energy requirements but also the importance of regional and global energy connectivity.
