Türkiye's passenger car and light commercial vehicle market shrank 25% year-on-year in July to 80,786 units, leaving total sales for the first seven months of 2026 down 10.72% at 638,965 vehicles, Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) data showed on Tuesday.
Passenger car sales dropped 25.8% from a year earlier to 62,478 units in July, while light commercial vehicle sales fell 22.2% to 18,308 units. For the January–July period, passenger car sales declined 12.1% to 502,712 units, while light commercial vehicle deliveries fell 5% to 136,253 units.
Brokerage PhilipCapital stressed that July marked the weakest monthly sales performance since January as the year-on-year decline accelerated from the previous month. The market could begin a gradual recovery later this year, supported by potential interest rate cuts and pent-up demand, it noted.
Gasoline-powered cars remained the largest passenger car segment in July with 25,554 units sold, down 28.7% from a year earlier and accounting for 40.9% of total passenger car sales.
Hybrid vehicle sales fell 11.9% to 20,120 units, outperforming the broader market and increasing their share to 32.2% from 27.1% a year earlier. The category was supported by mild hybrids, whose sales climbed 21% to 16,083 units, while plug-in hybrid deliveries plunged 92.8% to 292 units.
Battery electric vehicle sales dropped 27.1% to 12,715 units, representing 20.4% of passenger car deliveries. Diesel-powered car sales tumbled 56.3% to 3,305 units, while LPG-powered models jumped 47.9% to 784 units.
Over the first seven months of the year, gasoline-powered car sales fell 19.8% to 208,046 units, while hybrid vehicles were the only major powertrain category to grow, rising 3.5% to 165,924 units. Battery electric vehicle sales declined 9% to 94,046 units, diesel-powered cars dropped 32% to 30,790 units and LPG-powered models increased 4.1% to 3,906 units.
Imported vehicles continued to dominate Türkiye's auto market in July, accounting for 54,154 of the 80,786 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles sold during the month, giving them a 67% market share, while domestically produced models totaled 26,632 units, or 33%.
The trend held over the first seven months of the year, with imported vehicles making up 430,373 of the 638,965 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles sold, representing a 67.4% market share, compared with 208,592 domestically produced models, which accounted for 32.6%.
Renault remained Türkiye's best-selling passenger car brand in both July and the January–July period, selling 8,486 and 77,050 units, respectively, while Ford continued to lead the light commercial vehicle segment with 4,766 sales in July and 33,669 over the first seven months of the year.
Among dedicated EV manufacturers, Togg stayed on top with 4,600 sales in July, ahead of BYD with 3,788 and an estimated 295 Teslas. It also led the January–July rankings with 25,848 registrations, followed by BYD at 6,832 and Tesla with an estimated 4,088.
