Türkiye's Gabar oil field, the country's largest onshore oil field, has reached a record daily production of 83,300 barrels, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced on Thursday.
In a statement on social media, Bayraktar said Gabar had once been a place associated with "blood, tears and hopelessness" but had become a center for production, employment and hope under Türkiye's "Terror-Free Türkiye" initiative.
"We will continue working tirelessly to increase production and remain a source of hope for our citizens' future," Bayraktar added.
Located in the mountainous Cudi-Gabar region of Sirnak province near the Iraqi border, the Gabar field was discovered in 2021 after state-owned Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) stepped up exploration activities in southeastern Türkiye.
Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar has previously estimated the field's reserves at around 1 billion barrels of oil, while the government aims to raise production to 100,000 barrels per day.
According to TPAO's 2025 annual report, production at the Gabar project averaged 81,000 barrels of crude oil per day from 149 producing wells as of December 2025, accounting for about 62% of Türkiye's total crude oil production of roughly 130,000 barrels per day.
Despite record output from Gabar and TPAO's expanding operations, domestic crude production remains far from sufficient to meet Türkiye's oil demand, leaving the country heavily reliant on imports.
The country imported 31.9 million tons of crude oil in 2025, equivalent to about 234.1 million barrels, or roughly 641,400 barrels per day, according to official data from the energy market regulator.
Türkiye's total crude oil supply reached 38.6 million tons during the year, equivalent to about 282.8 million barrels, or approximately 774,900 barrels per day.
Domestic production accounted for 6.7 million tons, or about 48.7 million barrels (133,500 barrels per day), meeting only 17.2% of the country's total crude oil supply.
Overall energy imports totaled $65.5 billion in 2025, according to central bank data.
Looking ahead, TPAO aims to increase combined oil and natural gas production to 500,000 barrels per day by 2028 before eventually raising output to 1 million barrels per day.
