The U.S. government has entered into an $80 billion strategic partnership to accelerate nuclear power generation across the country as part of efforts to meet the growing energy demands driven by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, according to a statement on Tuesday.

The initiative brings together Brookfield Asset Management, Westinghouse Electric Company, and Cameco Corporation, aiming to build at least $80 billion worth of new reactors nationwide to accelerate nuclear power and artificial intelligence deployment in the United States.

The plan aligns with President Donald Trump’s executive order issued in May, which calls for 10 large nuclear reactors to be under construction by 2030, the statement said. The U.S. government will provide the initial capital investment required to launch the project, it added.

The plan represents Washington’s most substantial investment in nuclear power since Trump returned to office in January.

US scales up nuclear projects amid rising AI power demand

The partnership will facilitate the growth and future of the American nuclear power industry and its supporting supply chain. Each two-unit Westinghouse AP1000 project is expected to create or sustain 45,000 manufacturing and engineering jobs across 43 states, while national deployment could generate more than 100,000 construction jobs.

The statement said the program will help cement the United States as one of the world’s leading nuclear energy powers and expand exports of Westinghouse’s nuclear power generation technology globally.

Once operational, the reactors will generate reliable and secure power, including for large-scale data centers and computing infrastructure that underpin the country’s AI growth.

Officials tout AI-fueled nuclear strategy

Howard Lutnick, Secretary for the United States Department of Commerce, said the administration is focused on ensuring the rapid development, deployment, and use of advanced nuclear technologies.

"This historic partnership supports our national security objectives and enhances our critical infrastructure," Lutnick said.

Chris Wright, Secretary for the United States Department of Energy, also emphasized the broader strategic importance of the initiative.

"This historic partnership with America’s leading nuclear company will help unleash President Trump’s grand vision to fully energize America and win the global AI race," Wright said. "President Trump promised a renaissance of nuclear power, and now he is delivering."
