Vodafone Türkiye, the Turkish arm of British telecommunications company Vodafone, and UAE-based digital infrastructure company DAMAC Digital opened the first phase of a new data center in Izmir on Friday.
The facility, built through a 50-50 partnership between the two companies, is Vodafone's sixth data center in Türkiye. It covers 7,500 square meters and has more than 650 cabinets, with an initial capacity of 4 megawatts (MW).
The first phase represents an investment of about $100 million, while the partners plan to expand the facility's capacity to 20 MW and increase the total investment to about $300 million under their long-term partnership.
The center is positioned to serve corporate customers across the Aegean region while providing access to national and international connectivity networks, the company said in a statement.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu attended the opening ceremony alongside Vodafone Türkiye CEO Engin Aksoy, DAMAC Digital Senior Vice President Maan Manna and representatives from the public and business sectors.
Uraloglu described the facility as a new digital asset for Türkiye and highlighted its location as an advantage for companies in the Aegean region. He also pointed to its access to national and international connectivity infrastructure.
Aksoy said Vodafone Türkiye completed the center in 1.5 years and presented the project as part of the company's broader investment in Türkiye's digital infrastructure.
With the new facility, Vodafone aims to turn Izmir into a data center hub for Türkiye and the Mediterranean while providing corporate customers with cloud, connectivity, managed services and cybersecurity solutions through facilities in different cities.
More than 100 petabytes of data are processed each month across Vodafone's infrastructure, alongside millions of transactions, thousands of applications and large volumes of signals analyzed in real time, according to the company.
Vodafone says it has made about ₺600 billion ($12.4 billion) in real-term investments in Türkiye over its 20 years in the country. The company serves more than 25 million mobile customers, millions of small and medium-sized businesses and thousands of large organizations.
