After nearly three decades, "The Mummy" is officially heading back to cinemas. The fourth installment of the franchise, originally launched in 1999, is scheduled to be released on May 19, 2028, bringing Oscar-winning actor Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz back together on screen for the first time in 27 years.
According to an announcement by Universal Pictures, the new film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, members of the filmmaking collective Radio Silence.
When The Mummy first premiered in 1999, it introduced audiences to adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn, whose encounter with a cursed ancient priest set off a supernatural chain of events. An Egyptologist is a scholar specializing in the history, language, and archaeology of ancient Egypt, a field central to the film’s storyline.
The film’s blend of action, fantasy and classic monster-movie elements struck a chord with global audiences. Its success led to a sequel in 2001, titled "The Mummy Returns," which further expanded the franchise and helped turn Fraser into an international action star. By reworking traditional monster cinema for a modern audience, the series managed to carve out a lasting cultural footprint.
The upcoming fourth installment will once again bring Rick O’Connell and Evelyn O’Connell to the big screen, reuniting Fraser and Weisz after nearly three decades.
Notably, Weisz did not appear in the third film, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor", released in 2008. Her return is therefore expected to stand out as a major development for long-time followers of the franchise.
