Unye Castle is one of the most important historic sites on the Black Sea coast. In about a year since it reopened to the public after a major restoration, it has received 750,000 visitors.
The castle stands on a steep rocky outcrop in Ordu province in northern Türkiye. It was originally built by Mithridates VI, king of the Pontic Kingdom. Today, it is seen as one of the most important historical and tourist landmarks in both Türkiye and the wider Black Sea region.
The castle reopened to visitors on June 3, 2025, after restoration and landscaping work. These efforts aimed to update the historic site for modern tourism, according to a statement from Unye Municipality.
Since reopening, the site has attracted visitors from all over Türkiye and from other countries. They now have direct access to a structure that has stood for more than two thousand years.
One of the castle's most unique features is a tunnel carved into the rock, which was likely used as a shelter and water source in the past. Visitors can reach the tunnel using a rail system that Unye Municipality says is unique in the world. This feature is one of the main attractions for visitors.
The castle’s long history, restored interior, and panoramic views from its rocky perch have made it popular with both local and international tourists.
The surging influx of visitors has delivered a significant boost to tourism in the Unye district. The municipality reported that attendance has reached 750,000, a major milestone for the historic site, which underwent extensive restorations before reopening in 2025.
Unye is a coastal district in Ordu province, located on the Black Sea between the cities Samsun and Giresun.
