Ayanikola Island, a historic site in the Unye district of Ordu province containing the remains of an 18th-century church, is all set for restoration following the approval of a restoration and landscaping project, after which it will be opened to visitors.
The Ordu Metropolitan Municipality recently announced that the Samsun Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Assets has approved the project for the island, whose history dates to the 1700s.
According to the statement, the island will be restored to its original condition as part of a project carried out by the Ordu Metropolitan Municipality's Department of Zoning and Urban Planning, with support from the Ordu Governorship Investment Monitoring and Coordination Directorate.
The structure, which has been placed under state jurisdiction in accordance with the Coastal Law, has been allocated to the Ordu Metropolitan Municipality for a period of two years.
New bridge and lights to beautify the site
"Within the scope of the project approved by the Samsun Regional Board for the Protection of Cultural Assets, access to the island will be provided via a wooden bridge designed in harmony with the natural and cultural fabric of the area," the municipality said.
"Wooden steps will also be placed around the island, and lighting works will make the site visible at night as well."
The municipality stated that the project aims to bring one of Ünye's most significant heritage sites back to public attention and integrate it into the tourism landscape.
The initiative is also expected to contribute to the region's social and cultural life.
