A24 is re-releasing its record-breaking horror film "Backrooms" in theaters this week with an extended version that adds 15 minutes of bonus footage.

This new cut, called "Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition," will be shown only at AMC Theatres starting July 3.

AMC says the re-release features a "theatrically exclusive post-credit" scene with extra footage from director Kane Parsons. The updated version has a total runtime of two hours and six minutes.

Box office performance

Backrooms was made for $10 million and has earned over $330 million worldwide. It is now A24's highest-grossing film and one of the most profitable movies of the year.

In the United States, it is the second-highest-grossing horror film of 2026, just behind "Obsession," which made more than $370 million globally on a $750,000 budget.

The re-release comes just before the July 4 holiday weekend, which is one of the busiest times for movie theaters. However, it will compete with Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5" and Universal and Illumination's "Minions & Monsters," a spinoff from the "Despicable Me" series.

The film and its cast

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in "Backrooms" as the owner of Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire, a furniture store. His character finds a mysterious doorway in the basement and enters a vast, unsettling space.

Renate Reinsve, recognized for her role in "A Different Man," plays his therapist. The cast also features Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. Will Soodik wrote the screenplay.

A debut built on YouTube

Parsons, now 20, made his feature film debut with "Backrooms." He based the movie on a creepypasta-inspired video series he started posting on YouTube in 2022, when he was a teenager. The series has over 190 million views. The film's success has attracted attention in Hollywood for both its box office results and Parsons' background as a YouTube creator.

"Backrooms" is not the only low-budget horror film to find success this summer. "Obsession," directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, who also started his career on YouTube, has earned more than "Backrooms" at the global box office, even though its production budget was just $750,000.

Critical reception

The film has been noted for its psychological tone and visual style. One review called it “at once complex and sparse, but never repetitive,” and said that although it “ultimately loses steam by its cryptic end,” it “effectively captures modern anxieties and isolation.” The story takes place in 1990.

A spokesperson for A24 did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the re-release.
