Balkan music star Goran Bregovic gave a concert at the ancient city of Sardis in Salihli, a district of Manisa province in western Türkiye.

Music fans filled Sardis, the capital of the Lydian Kingdom and a site on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, for events organized by the Manisa Metropolitan Municipality to showcase the region’s history and cultural heritage.

The concert took place on a specially lit stage set up in front of the Gymnasium complex, one of the monumental structures of the ancient city dating to the Roman era. A large crowd of art lovers attended the show against the backdrop of the ancient ruins.

Accompanied by his “The Wedding and The Funeral Band,” Bregovic performed well-known pieces from his Balkan repertoire. Audience members danced along to the music throughout the performance, which lasted about two hours.

Addressing the crowd from the stage, Bregovic said: “I am very happy to be with you this evening. I wish you a joyful night full of music.”

Concert moved after mine collapse

At the end of the concert, Manisa Metropolitan Mayor Besim Dutlulu presented the artist with a handwoven Demirci carpet, a traditional rug from the Demirci district of Manisa.

Dutlulu noted that the concert had originally been scheduled for Oct. 3 but was postponed after a collapse at a coal mine in Soma, a district of Manisa, killed five workers.

Dutlulu thanked Bregovic for understanding the request to postpone and for agreeing to move the concert to Oct. 10.
