The 23rd International Bodrum Ballet Festival will bring together dance companies from Türkiye and abroad between July 31 and Aug. 17, organized by the General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet.
The festival will take place at the North Moat Stage of Bodrum Castle, in the Aegean coastal resort town of Bodrum, and will present a program spanning classical repertoire and contemporary dance productions.
The opening will be staged by the Izmir State Opera and Ballet, representing Türkiye's third-largest city on the Aegean coast, on July 31 and Aug. 1 with Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake." Based on the classical choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, the production is staged by G. Armagan Davran and A. Volkan Ersoy and centers on themes of love, loyalty and the struggle of good against evil.
The Ankara State Opera and Ballet, representing Türkiye's capital, will follow on Aug. 4 and 5 with "Zorba," set to music by Mikis Theodorakis and choreographed by Lorca Massine.
On Aug. 8 and 9, the Antalya State Opera and Ballet will present "Carmina Burana," built around the music of Carl Orff. Antalya is a resort city on Türkiye's southern Mediterranean coast. The production, developed through joint choreography, explores fate, love, nature and human life through dance.
A highlight of this year's program is the participation of the Kosovo National Ballet, which will perform in Bodrum for the first time on Aug. 12 and 13. The company will present "Bolero," choreographed by Mehmet Balkan to Maurice Ravel's composition, alongside "Correr o Fado," choreographed by Daniel Cardoso.
The festival will close with a modern dance production titled "Pinokyo.exe," staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Modern Dance Company, MDTistanbul. Istanbul is Türkiye's largest city. The performance, scheduled for Aug. 16 and 17, is choreographed by Erika Silgoner and reinterprets Carlo Collodi's classic Pinocchio story through a technological lens.
