Comedian and television host Bassem Youssef met audiences in Istanbul as part of his international "The Belly of the Beast" tour, performing an English-language show at the Istanbul Congress Center.
The event, organized by Tuz Biber, brought together fans from different backgrounds, with Youssef opening the night by greeting the crowd with "Iyi aksamlar Istanbul." He told the audience that he loved Istanbul and had visited the city before.
Throughout the show, Youssef kept up a close exchange with the crowd, asking several audience members where they were from and what they did for a living. His improvised responses to their answers drew laughter from the hall and became one of the central parts of the performance.
Youssef also spoke about his experiences performing in Germany, using them as a way to touch on the boundaries of free expression for comedians. The performance lasted around 90 minutes and was carried out entirely in English.
During the show, Youssef also referred to the debates he has faced over his criticism of Israel's long-running occupation of Palestine and what he has described as genocide in Gaza.
Youssef is widely known as the host of "Al Bernameg," described as the Middle East's first political satire program. The show first began on YouTube before moving to television, where it reached a broad regional audience and drew around 30 million viewers each week.
His success brought him international recognition in 2013, when Time magazine included him in its list of most influential people under the "Pioneer" category. The same year, he received the Committee to Protect Journalists' International Press Freedom Award.
Youssef later appeared in international productions on platforms including Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+ and Amazon Prime Video. In 2024, his one-man stand-up tour, "The Middle Beast," sold more than 100,000 tickets worldwide.
Known in recent years for his criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, Youssef had also previously shared a humorous social media video about Istanbul's cats.
