A minaret dome at the historic Atlamatasi Mosque in Istanbul’s Fatih district collapsed after being struck by a construction crane during restoration works on Thursday morning.

According to initial reports, a tower crane operating within the mosque’s restoration site collided with the minaret while transporting construction materials. The impact caused the upper section of the minaret, described as its dome or pinnacle, to break off and fall to the ground.

Mosque closed for restoration for one year

The collision led to the collapse of the minaret’s upper section, with debris falling into the mosque courtyard and nearby areas. The site was promptly secured, and access was restricted as a precautionary measure.

Although the incident caused significant structural damage, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Witnesses said they heard a loud noise at the moment of impact and saw debris falling from the minaret into the courtyard.

The Atlamatasi Mosque, believed to date back around 400 years to the Ottoman period, had been closed for approximately one year due to ongoing restoration and maintenance work.

Authorities have launched an investigation and technical assessment to determine the extent of the structural damage and to review safety procedures at the site.
