Fazil Say Jazz Quintet has completed the first leg of its “Say Plays Jazz on Tour with Skoda” concert series after taking the stage in Ayvalik, Cesme, Ephesus and Bodrum.

Led by Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say, the group brought jazz improvisation and classical music together through a program that reached thousands of concertgoers, according to a statement from the organizers.

Classical works take on a new jazz form

The approximately 85-minute program featured 18 interconnected pieces, including two new compositions performed for audiences for the first time.

The repertoire moved between Say’s original works and newly arranged interpretations. The ensemble performed pieces ranging from “From Bodrum to Paganini Jazz” and “Achilles” from the “Troy Sonata” to “Kara Toprak” and “Kirilgan,” a work associated with Turkish writer Murathan Mungan.

The program also included new arrangements of Can Yucel’s “Sardunyaya Agit” and Haydar Ergulen’s “Uzgun Kediler Gazeli,” bringing poetry-inspired works into the quintet’s jazz-focused performance.

Ezgi Alas joined Say on vocals; Aslihan and Say on flute, Serdar Barcin on saxophone, and Ferit Odman on drums.
