Preparations have entered their final phase at foreign memorials and cemeteries on the Gallipoli Campaign sites across the Historic Gallipoli Peninsula in Türkiye, as authorities get ready to host international ceremonies on April 24–25, marking the 111th anniversary.
Teams from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission have stepped up maintenance efforts across dozens of burial grounds and memorials, working to ensure the sites are fully prepared to receive international visitors and official delegations.
The work focuses on practical yet essential tasks such as landscaping, planting seasonal flowers, mowing grass, and maintaining the natural vegetation, all of which help present the sites in a dignified and respectful condition ahead of the commemorations.
The peninsula is expected to welcome visitors from countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, reflecting the global dimension of the commemorations tied to Anzac Day, which honors soldiers who fought in the campaign.
Officials indicate that maintenance is not limited to ceremonial periods, as teams carry out upkeep throughout the year in a continuous cycle. However, the weeks leading up to the ceremonies involve intensified efforts to bring all locations up to standard.
Recent rainfall has accelerated grass growth, requiring teams to focus heavily on mowing and trimming, while also repairing borders around memorials and pruning plants to maintain a well-kept landscape.
To manage the workload efficiently, the Gallipoli Peninsula has been divided into three main operational areas: Anzac, Helles, and Suvla. Dedicated teams are assigned to each zone, ensuring that all cemeteries and memorials receive equal attention.
At the same time, preparations are nearing completion at Turkish memorials and key ceremony locations, including major monuments and historically significant gathering points such as Anzac Cove and Conkbayiri.
Temporary seating stands, stages, rest areas, and security corridors are being set up to accommodate attendees, while sound systems and communication tents are being installed at key sites to support the smooth running of the events.
