The five-level Manazan Caves in Türkiye's central Karaman province draw hundreds of visitors on weekends, standing out as a historic complex carved entirely by hand into a massive rock formation.
Located within the boundaries of Taskale village, north of the Yesildere Valley, the caves consist of a multi-level dwelling complex cut directly into the rock, with narrow corridors and vertical shafts connecting parts of the structure.
The first two levels consist of numerous small, cell-like rooms, while the upper levels are traditionally known to locals as Kumkale, At Meydani and Oluler Meydani, meaning Sand Castle, Horse Square and Square of the Dead.
Higher levels can be accessed through narrow passages and shafts, adding to the distinctive layout of the hand-carved complex.
The Manazan Caves are also notable for their clay-rich limestone structure, which helps keep temperature and humidity levels relatively stable inside.
These conditions slow down the deterioration of organic materials, and the caves are thought to have been used in earlier periods not only because of security concerns but also because of this natural characteristic.

Manazan Cave attendant Ahmet Gorgun said the historic site attracts particularly strong interest at weekends, when hundreds of people visit the complex.
Visitors described the caves as impressive from a tourism perspective while calling for lighting to be installed to make moving through the interior easier and to better bring out the site's historic character.
