Harry Styles paid tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne on Friday night, debuting a previously unreleased song he wrote for him on the second anniversary of Payne’s death.
Styles performed the song, "What Is Enough," at a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Before playing it, Styles spoke to the crowd about the significance of the date. "I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me," he said.
He explained that many friends and colleagues had helped him get where he is. "And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends."
Styles told fans that many of them may have faced a similar loss. "I hope you haven’t," he said, "but really, it’s just about looking after each other." He said he wrote the song for Payne about two years ago and asked the audience if it was all right to play it. Then he began the live debut.
In the two years since Payne’s death, all four surviving members of One Direction (Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik) have released new music in some form.
Their public appearances during that time have given fans a chance to mourn Payne and celebrate his life.
Styles is currently in the middle of a 30-night run at Madison Square Garden, which supports his fourth studio album, "Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally," released on March 6. The New York shows are part of his Together, Together world residency, which includes 50 concerts in seven cities.
