The Istanbul Jazz Festival opened its 36th edition this week with a program of international and Turkish musicians, ranging from contemporary jazz and Afro-Cuban music to electronic productions and Mediterranean sounds.
Running Oct. 7-11 under the theme "The City's Jazz Mood," the festival is spread across several venues in the city, according to a statement from the organizers.
Tunisian oud virtuoso Dhafer Youssef and vocalist Yazmin Lacey are scheduled to perform Oct. 7. Trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, a 10-time Grammy winner, and vibraphonist Sasha Berliner follow on Oct. 8. Drummer and producer Kassa Overall performs Oct. 9.
On Oct. 10, Grammy-winning vocalist Nicole Zuraitis, Yasmine Hamdan, who blends Eastern and Western music, and the Samora Pinderhughes Trio will take the stage.
Trumpeter Imer Demirer will mark his 50th year as a musician with a special concert Oct. 9.
A series of club nights, scheduled for Oct. 6, features Ezgi Sevgi Can, Cansu Nihal Akarsu and Cenk Esen performing at separate venues.
The festival closes Oct. 11 with a program that includes Savina Yannatou and Primavera en Salonico, and "Watersong," a project by Tunisian vocalist Lamia Bedioui built around the theme of water. London-based group Kinkajous will present an audiovisual show.
The festival also includes talks and listening sessions. On Oct. 10, Can Surmen will lead a rhythm session to discuss how listeners perceive it, titled "Imperfect Times: The Human Side of Groove."
On Oct. 11, artists Sibel Kose and Cem Tuncer, conductor of the TRT Istanbul Radio Light Music and Jazz Orchestra, will discuss the role broadcasters have played in the development of jazz.
