The film, "The Spiral," directed by Strippoli, whose previous credits include "The Holy Boy" and "A Classic Horror Story," screened as part of the Venice Film Festival lineup.
The audience applauded for approximately nine minutes following the screening, with the director and cast continuing to acknowledge the crowd during the extended response.
The film stars Jasmine Trinca, known for "Saint Laurent" and "The Caiman," as Anna, a mother who makes an agreement with a devil figure, played by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, in an effort to save her daughter Alice, played by Romana Maggiora Vergano, following an accident.
The arrangement sets off a series of events that affect the family. Adriano Giannini plays Anna's husband, Walter, and Andrea Genovese plays their son, Tobia.
"The Spiral" is competing for the festival's top prize, the Golden Lion. The jury is headed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, director of "The Bride!"
The film is scheduled to screen next at the Toronto International Film Festival, in its Midnight Madness section. Le Pacte is handling international sales for the film.
