Keanu Reeves is in negotiations to star in Paramount Pictures’ English-language remake of the 2019 South Korean crime thriller "The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok, who starred in the original, will reprise his role. He is also a producer on the project through his company Big Punch Global.

James Wan, the filmmaker behind "The Conjuring" and "Insidious," is directing. It would be his first feature since 2023’s "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom." Wan is also producing through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, alongside Michael Clear and Jason Blum.

Other producers include Sylvester Stallone and D. Matt Geller of Balboa Productions, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Chris S. Lee of B&C Group, and Jang Won-seok, CEO of BA Entertainment.

From Cannes to Hollywood

The original film premiered in the Midnight Screenings section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

It follows a police officer and a crime boss who reluctantly team up to hunt a serial killer. Each has his own motives, leading to double-crosses, cat-and-mouse chases, and clashes between police and criminals and between rival gangs.

Eric Pearson, whose credits include "Thunderbolts*" and "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," wrote the latest script, based on earlier drafts by Shay Hatten (Resident Evil) and Brian Helgeland (A Knight’s Tale, L.A. Confidential).

Reeves most recently starred in Apple TV’s "Outcome," a dramedy directed by Jonah Hill that premiered in April.

He also voices the character Shadow in "Sonic the Hedgehog 4," which Paramount will release March 19, 2027.
