The sweet and fragrant taste of mango, often called the “king of fruits,” was celebrated in Istanbul this weekend at a special event organized to introduce Pakistan’s most iconic fruit to the Turkish market.
The event, titled “King of Fruits, Pakistani Mango”, was hosted by the Pakistani Consul General in Istanbul and attended by dozens of guests from different walks of life—the gathering aimed to promote the fruit as both a cultural symbol and an economic export for Pakistan.
Speaking at the event, Consul General Nauman Aslam described mango as a unique fruit, pointing out that Pakistan is the world’s fourth-largest producer.
He explained that production reaches hundreds of thousands of tons annually, with around 20 different varieties grown in Punjab and Sindh provinces.
Aslam underlined that Pakistan already exports mangoes to many regions, including the Middle East, Europe, Australia, and the United States, and emphasized that Türkiye has started to see the fruit enter its markets in recent years. He said such promotional events would help Turkish consumers become more familiar with the fruit.
Guests at the celebration sampled freshly cut mangoes prepared in different styles, along with mango milkshakes. Aslam noted that mangoes also play a role in public diplomacy.
“Mango is a sweet fruit, and, of course, diplomatic language is also supposed to be sweet. So, when the sweetness of the two things gets together, it makes collaboration between communities very sweet and very convenient,” he said.
Aslam emphasized that Pakistan remains a predominantly agrarian economy, with fruits and vegetables playing a central role in its exports.
Citrus fruits and mangoes, he added, are among the country’s most important agricultural products sent abroad.
