'Princess Mumbi' wins Golden Tulip at Istanbul Film Festival

The 45th Istanbul Film Festival has closed with its award ceremony at The Marmara Taksim, with Damien Hauser's Princess Mumbi taking the festival's top prize, the Golden Tulip.

Held by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), the festival brought filmgoers together from April 9 to 19 across seven venues on both sides of Istanbul, where 39 short and feature-length films competed.

Closing night that brought competition into focus

At the end of the festival, the Golden Tulip Competition jury, chaired by David Mackenzie, singled out Princess Mumbi for the event's highest honor. The jury also handed the Special Jury Prize to Bi Gan's Resurrection, while Best Director went to Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret for Summer Camp.

The Best Screenplay award was presented to Markus Schleinzer and Alexander Brom for Rose. In the acting categories, Inci Sefa Cingoz won Best Actress for her performance in Whistlers in the Dark, while Kemal Burak Alper received Best Actor for Dead Dogs Don't Bite. The jury also gave a special mention to Gyorgy Palfi's Chicken.

Short films and new voices stood out

In the Short Film Competition, Dalya Keles's Gravity was selected as Best Short Film, while Berna Sitera Degirmen's Love and Others received a special mention.

The festival's New Perspectives section, which highlights emerging work, awarded the Seyfi Teoman Best Film Prize to Morteza Atabaki's 32 Meters. Atabaki also picked up the Best Editing award for the same film.

Turkish productions picked up wide range of honors

The Most Beautiful Funeral Songs came away with several awards, as Ziya Demirel and Yusuf Tan Demirel received Best Screenplay, while Esra Dermancioglu won Best Actress. Cagdas Ekin Sisman was recognized as Best Supporting Actress, and Ozer Kececi received Best Supporting Actor.

Elsewhere, Cemetery of Nameless Works earned Elif Oner the Best Art Direction award, and Efe Demiral won Best Music for the same film. Resat Okan Candemir was named Best Cinematographer for Goat501, while Burak Dakak won Best Actor for About My Mother.

International and industry juries added further recognition

Among the side awards, the International Federation of Film Critics, known as FIPRESCI, gave its prize to Mark Jenkin's Rose of Nevada. The Film Directors Association's Best Director award, presented in memory of Osman Sinav, went to Sunay Terzioglu for Vines, Roots and Passions.

The Turkish Film Critics Association, or SIYAD, named Melik Kuru's Cemetery of Nameless Works Best Film, while the Best Documentary award from the Turkish Association of Documentary Filmmakers, known as BSB, went to Volkan Uce's 2m2.

Alongside the screenings and competitions, the 21st edition of Meetings on the Bridge also brought together film professionals at the Pera Museum. According to the festival organizers, cinema figures from 31 countries met there and presented awards to selected projects.
