The hit West End musical "The Bodyguard," built around some of Whitney Houston's best-known songs, will make its Türkiye debut in Istanbul in September, bringing its original international cast, live orchestra and English-language production to Zorlu Performing Arts Center (Zorlu PSM).
Based on the 1992 film starring Houston and Kevin Costner, the musical will run at the Istanbul performing arts venue from Sept. 11 to 20, combining the film's romantic-thriller storyline with songs including I Will Always Love You, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and Queen of the Night.
Presented by Michael Harrison and David Ian in collaboration with Turkish production company BKM and Zorlu PSM, the production will be performed in English with Turkish surtitles, which provide translated text above or alongside the stage for local audiences.
According to Karnaval, the event's media sponsor, the show will feature a live orchestra, elaborate choreography, and stage design. Its original international cast will also take the production to Türkiye for the first time.
The story follows former Secret Service agent Frank Farmer, who is brought in to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an obsessed fan. As the danger surrounding Marron grows, the professional relationship between the singer and her bodyguard develops into a romance.
The stage production draws on the 1992 film The Bodyguard, written by Lawrence Kasdan and starring Houston alongside Costner.
Directed by Thea Sharrock and featuring a script by Oscar-winning writer Alexander Dinelaris, the musical first opened at London's Adelphi Theatre, where it went on to receive four Olivier Award nominations.
The production later spread to international stages, including Germany, South Korea, Canada, Australia, France, the United States and Japan, before adding Türkiye to its international run.
Evening performances at Zorlu PSM are scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 11-13 and Sept. 15-20, while additional 3:30 p.m. matinees will take place on Sept. 12-13 and Sept. 19-20.
