The production on the third season of HBO's 'The Last of Us' has been suspended for nearly a month, according to official film and television production logs in British Columbia.

The show, which films in Vancouver under the pseudonym Calm Current, is listed in the British Columbia production directory as being on hiatus from June 1 to June 28, 2026.

No official statement has been issued by HBO or the production team regarding the stoppage. Industry sources point to scheduling disruptions caused by upcoming World Cup matches in the Vancouver area as the primary reason behind the pause.

Cameras began rolling on season 3 on March 2, with production originally scheduled to run continuously through November 27. The hiatus represents the first significant interruption to what was anticipated to be an unbroken shooting schedule.

New chapter, new lead

When filming resumes, season 3 is set to shift its central focus to Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever. The upcoming season will follow Abby's three-day journey through a post-apocalyptic Seattle, tracing the events that led her to cross paths with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal).

The season is also expected to explore the ongoing conflict between two rival factions in Seattle: the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), a militarized group, and the Seraphites, a cult-like organization seeking control of the city.

New cast additions include Kyriana Kratter as Lev, a teenage Seraphite, and Michelle Mao as Yara, Lev's sister.

Set photos published online ahead of the hiatus showed Dever's character alongside Kratter's Lev, both in combat-ready attire, in what appear to be Vancouver street locations, dressed to resemble a dystopian Seattle.

Mixed reception shadows season 3

The production pause comes as the franchise navigates a notably divided response to its second season.

While critics awarded season 2 a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audience scores told a sharply different story.

With more than 5,000 user reviews submitted, the audience score settled at 37%—a stark contrast to the near-universal praise that greeted the first season, which holds a 96% rating on the same platform.

The split reaction has highlighted the challenges the show faces as it enters its third installment, particularly given the significant narrative shift away from established fan favorites.

'The Last of Us' began as a video game franchise developed by Naughty Dog, with the first game released in 2013.

The series has since expanded into comic books, remasters, and the HBO adaptation, which debuted to widespread acclaim.

Season 3 remains on track for completion by the end of November, pending no further interruptions.
