In the episode that aired Sunday, Aug. 30, ''The Walking Dead: Dead City'' explores an alternate reality where Maggie, played by Lauren Cohan, and Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, escaped the zombie outbreak entirely.

The episode also gave fans a reunion between Maggie and her sister Beth, played by Emily Kinney, whose character was killed off more than a decade ago in the flagship show's fifth season.

According to PEOPLE, Kinney described the experience of stepping back into the role she left behind in 2014 as thoroughly enjoyable. Despite the years that had passed, she said it felt natural to slip back into the part, comparing the whole experience to a joyful celebration.

Emily Kinney opens up on the surprise comeback

The actress says she never saw the offer coming, even though she and 'Walking Dead' chief content officer Scott M. Gimple had remained close over the years.

Kinney explains that Gimple had been in regular contact with her but kept quiet about the plans, giving nothing away. "I really had no idea," she says.

Kinney recalls her representatives reaching out to ask if she'd be open to reading the script. Once she did, emotion took over, and drawn in by the chance to portray a new version of Beth, she immediately knew she wanted to be part of it.

In this alternate version of events shown in ''The Walking Dead: Dead City,'' Beth has pursued a singing career in New York City, and Maggie makes the trip from their family farm in Georgia to catch one of her performances.

The detail ties back to Beth's original arc on 'The Walking Dead,' where music played a key role in her character, often lifting the spirits of fellow survivors.
