Director Maxime Alexandre waited as reporters' questions at the gala for his Turkish horror film "Soy" went untranslated on Tuesday, until a cast member stepped in to interpret.
A reporter asked in Turkish about the experience of making a global-scale film in Türkiye with some of the country's leading actors. "How was it? Could you talk about the filming process?" the reporter said.
With no interpreter on hand, lead actress Farah Zeynep Abdullah asked, half-joking, "Am I the one who has to translate now?" Fellow cast member Ozge Ozacar then volunteered, relayed the question to Alexandre, and stepped in to interpret.
Farah then said, laughing, that she would not translate the part describing the cast as "one of Türkiye's leading actors," since it applied to her.
Cast member Ozge Ozacar said the full question had been passed along: "I told him. I translated it into his left ear."
Director Alexandre thanked the Turkish team and producer Saner Ayar for the chance to work with what he called a unique cast. "They made this movie absolutely unique, and I think that everybody's going to love it, I hope," he said.
A reporter followed up, asking whether working together had been enjoyable or whether there had been difficulties.
The cast conferred among themselves and agreed that working with Alexandre had been enjoyable and comfortable despite the language barrier.
"Soy" opens in theaters on Oct. 9, 2026. Alexandre is directing his fourth horror film. The cast includes Baris Arduc, Tuba Buyukustun, Tamer Levent, Mehmet Yilmaz Ak, Farah Zeynep Abdullah and Ozge Ozacar.
