The Turkish drama series "Esref Ruya" will end with its final episode on Wednesday evening, after a surprise decision canceled earlier plans for a third season.
According to a report by journalist Birsen Altuntas, the production team had previously been told that the series would carry on with a third season. However, a new decision changed the plan, bringing the series to a close after two seasons.
The series, produced by TIMS&B Productions, is expected to wrap up its story with a major final episode. Reports suggested that the decision was linked to problems in developing the storyline further and a decline in ratings.
Industry claims also suggested that the production company had asked the broadcaster for a 26-episode guarantee for the new season, while the channel reportedly offered a 13-episode guarantee instead. No further official details were included in the report.
Esref Ruya follows Esref Tek, played by Cagatay Ulusoy, a powerful figure in the criminal underworld who has wealth, influence and authority, but remains tied to a love he cannot fully name.
The story changes when Nisan, played by Demet Ozdemir, enters his life. A young musician, Nisan, reaches Esref emotionally and makes him fall in love again for the first time since Ruya.
Orphaned at a young age, Esref was drawn into crime through loneliness and later rose to become a dominant figure in that world. For him, other orphans became a substitute family, even though that family existed inside the criminal underworld.
While carrying the burden of leading underground organizations, Esref continued to search for peace, until Nisan pulled him into a new and unpredictable emotional journey.
Across its two-season run, Esref Ruya brought together several characters who became central to the story. Alongside Esref Tek and Nisan, the cast included Gurdal Bozok, Cigdem Serim, Faruk Sezeri, Muslum Cermik, Kadir Yanik, Irmak Bozok, Kenan Kamber and Yakup Karasan.
The series also gained attention for its music. Inspired by the love story of Ruya and Esref, Turkish pop singer Sezen Aksu wrote the song "Esref Saati" specifically for the show. The song, with lyrics by Aksu, music by Aytug Yargic and vocals by Nazli Bilginer Yengi, was first heard in the final scene of episode 30.
