Filmekimi, Istanbul's showcase of award-winning films from the world's major festivals, celebrates its 25th edition this month with a lineup headed by Cannes' Palme d'Or winner and, for the first time, in Mersin.

The festival, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts, runs Oct. 9-18 in Istanbul, with extra screenings starting Oct. 7. It then travels to Ankara, Izmir and Mersin.

Director urges audiences to look beyond winners

"This has been an exciting Filmekimi because we managed to get all the films we wanted, and when the year's films are good, the program is much better," festival director Kerem Ayan said.

Ayan encouraged audiences not to focus only on the headline winners. "Of course the award winners will sell out first," he said. "But if there are no seats left, take a look at the other films too."

Lineup of festival heavyweights

Roughly half the lineup comes from Cannes, he said, and many of those films will reach Turkish theaters this fall and winter.

The lineup is led by Cristian Mungiu's Palme d'Or winner "Fjord" and includes new films from directors such as Pedro Almodovar, Lee Chang-dong, Asghar Farhadi, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Werner Herzog, Martin McDonagh, and Taika Waititi, along with titles from Venice, Toronto, and Sundance.

The program also features "Naza," a documentary that won four awards at Venice. It was made by Israeli directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, who worked on "No Other Land."

The festival will take three Turkish films that won awards at this year's Istanbul Film Festival to Mersin, along with their directors: "Karanlikta Islik Calanlar," "Keci501" and "En Guzel Cenaze Sarkilari." Golden Tulip winner "Prenses Mumbi" will also screen outside Istanbul.

Four cities, two weeks of screenings

Screenings in Istanbul will take place at Atlas 1948, City's CineWAM Nisantasi, Kadikoy Sinemasi and Paribu Art.

The festival then moves to Buyulu Fener Kizilay in Ankara on Oct. 15-18, and to Paribu Cineverse MaviBahce in Izmir and Paribu Cineverse Forum in Mersin on Oct. 22-25.
