Three films co-produced by Türkiye's public broadcaster TRT are among the national submissions for the best international feature category at the Oscars, representing Türkiye, France and Japan.
According to a TRT statement, Türkiye's "Kesilmis Bir Agac Gibi," France's "Minotaur" and Japan's "All of a Sudden" will compete for the Oscar in the category at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2027.
"Like A Limbless Tree" (Kesilmis Bir Agac Gibi), directed by Tunc Davut, was selected to represent Türkiye at the 99th Academy Awards. The film won the TRT Co-Production Award at 12 Punto and premiered in October 2025 at the 62nd Antalya Film Festival. Antalya is a resort city on Türkiye's Mediterranean coast, in the south of the country.
The film then competed in November 2025 at the 13th Bogazici Film Festival in Istanbul and the 36th Ankara Film Festival in the capital. At Bogazici, Naim Kanat won the best editing award for the film.
France selected "Minotaur" as its submission. The film is directed by Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, who has two Oscar nominations. His earlier films "Leviathan" and "Loveless" were nominated in the same category.
It is a co-production of France, Germany, Türkiye, and Latvia and won the TRT International Co-Production Award at 12 Punto in 2025.
The film had its world premiere in May at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, held on the French Riviera in southern France, where it won the Grand Prix. It has since been screened at international film festivals and for audiences worldwide.
"All of a Sudden" is Japan's submission. It is directed by Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who won the Oscar for best international feature for "Drive My Car" at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022.
The film is a co-production of France, Japan, Türkiye, Germany, and Belgium, and it is Hamaguchi's first film shot in France.
The film also premiered at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto, who share the lead roles, won the festival's best actress award.
Each country can submit one film to the Best International Feature category, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the Oscars. The Academy will announce a shortlist of 15 films in the category on Dec. 15.
The official Oscar nominees will be announced Jan. 21, 2027, and the 99th Academy Awards ceremony will take place March 14.
