Organized with the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Istanbul, the event will take place Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Istanbul Modern Auditorium. Gordenker will give a talk titled "Quality Over Quantity: A New Strategic Direction."
Gordenker, who has led the Van Gogh Museum since February 2020, will discuss the museum’s founding story and the strategic approach it has followed since 2021.
The talk is free and open to all art lovers. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided.
The Van Gogh Museum was established under an agreement between the heirs of Vincent van Gogh and the Dutch state and opened in Amsterdam in 1973. Its collection includes more than 200 of the artist’s paintings, about 500 drawings, hundreds of letters and a range of other artworks. The museum also serves as an international research center on Van Gogh’s life and work.
In addition to permanent and temporary exhibitions and educational programs, the museum presents Van Gogh’s works alongside those of his contemporaries. It also conducts scholarly research on the artist’s life, working methods and art.
The main building was designed by Gerrit Rietveld. An exhibition wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa was added in 1999, and a new entrance building connecting the museum to Museumplein was completed in 2015.
Gordenker earned her undergraduate degree at Yale University and a doctorate in 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. She has worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection and the Netherlands Institute for Art History.
She served as director of the Mauritshuis in The Hague from 2008 to 2020, where she led the museum’s landmark renovation project. She became director of the Van Gogh Museum in February 2020 and has helped shape its strategic direction.
