In Türkiye's southern province of Antalya, the ancient city of Side stands out as a rare destination where history and modern tourism coexist in harmony. Located in the Manavgat district and inhabited since the seventh century B.C., the city has evolved into a sustainable tourism model through a series of restoration and infrastructure projects that highlight its archaeological richness while offering a contemporary visitor experience.

Lighting up past with night tourism

Thanks to the introduction of “night museum” practices, Side now offers a distinct experience for those visiting after sunset. The city's illuminated ruins—including its grand theatre, agora, thermal baths, ancient harbor, and temples—create an unforgettable atmosphere that appeals especially to visitors avoiding the heat of the day. Seen from land or sea, the city’s glowing silhouette transforms into a breathtaking sight.

Temples and theatre restored to former glory

According to Candemir Zoroglu, Director of Culture and Tourism for the Antalya region, Side is not only one of Türkiye’s key tourist hubs but also a prominent European destination. He explained that Manavgat hosts around 300,000 accommodation beds, and the recent cultural investments aim to enhance the visitor experience while boosting the local economy.

Zoroglu detailed how the ancient site has undergone both excavation and landscaping work. A new visitor reception center was completed, and archaeological digs on key streets were finalized. The Side Archaeology Museum, originally established in 1969 as one of Türkiye’s first, has been restored with its original character intact and is now open for night visits.

The restoration of the symbolic Temple of Apollo and Temple of Athena has also been completed, with both monuments now lit and accessible to the public. “We completed the excavation and restoration work at the Apollo and Athena temples, illuminated them, and opened them to visitors,” Zoroglu noted.

Future projects underway

Plans are in motion to complete the restoration of the ancient theatre by next year, with the aim of hosting cultural and artistic events. Restoration work on the monumental fountain, another key structure in the city, is also actively progressing.

Zoroglu emphasized that there are no budgetary constraints for the cultural projects in Side. Every feasible proposal receives full support from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, enabling the rapid revitalization of many ancient structures.
