"The Bodyguard," staged to the soundtrack of Whitney Houston's unforgettable songs, has arrived in Istanbul with its original international cast, the musical's first-ever run in Türkiye.
Brought to Istanbul through a partnership between BKM and Zorlu PSM, the production held its Turkish premiere on Sept.11 and will continue running at Zorlu PSM through Sept. 20.
As Whitney Houston's classic hits, including "Queen of the Night," "I Have Nothing," "I Wanna Dance with Somebody," and "I Will Always Love You," came to life on stage, the energy in the room built steadily throughout the night.
By the finale, the audience was singing along in unison, turning "The Bodyguard's" opening night in Istanbul into an unforgettable experience.
"The Bodyguard" has reached over 3.9 million theatergoers across 15 countries and 45 U.S. cities to date. Now arriving in Türkiye as part of its world tour, the production will hold a limited run of performances in Istanbul.
A stage adaptation of the acclaimed 1992 film, the musical blends music, dance and dramatic storytelling.
The Istanbul performances feature the show's international cast accompanied by a live orchestra, with its choreography and stage design standing out as key highlights of the production.
Sidonie Smith, who plays global superstar Rachel Marron in the musical, told Anadolu Agency that bringing such a powerful, internationally famous character to life on stage has been an enjoyable challenge for her.
Smith shared the following about her character: "As a person and as a woman, I'm actually quite a calm person. Stepping outside myself to perform as someone fearless and unshakable is genuinely so much fun; I love that."
"While preparing for the role, I tried to keep reminding myself that she's just a woman. She has international fame, someone on Beyonce's level, for example. But at the end of the day, she's somebody's mother, somebody's sister, somebody's boss. So she carries all the real-life responsibilities and stresses that any woman might face. On top of all that, she also has to be a global superstar," she continued.
