The 83rd Venice International Film Festival concluded with its closing awards ceremony on the Lido, a barrier island off the coast of Venice in northeastern Italy, where the world's oldest film festival has been held since it began on September 2.
The Golden Lion, the festival's top prize for best film, went to "Women Unknown" (Kvinde Ukendt), directed by Egyptian-Danish filmmaker May el-Toukhy. The Silver Lion for best director was awarded to Ilya Khrzhanovsky, a Russian-born British citizen, for "Dau."
The Jury Special Prize went to "NAZA," a documentary addressing Israeli military operations and civilian deaths in Gaza.
American actor John Malkovich received the Volpi Cup for best actor for his role in "Wild Horse Nine." Danish actress Mathilde Arcel won the Volpi Cup for best actress for her performance in "Women Unknown." The award for best screenplay in the main competition went to Stephane Brize, Coralie Amedeo and Olivier Gorce for "Un bon Petit Soldat."
Ahead of the ceremony, a group of pro-Palestinian supporters flew kites made from Palestinian flags over the beaches of Lido Island, calling on festival organizers to raise the Palestinian flag alongside those of other nations at next year's edition.
Organizers announced that the 84th Venice International Film Festival will take place from Sept. 1 to 11, 2027.
