Rapper Kanye West, who performs under the name Ye, touched down in Istanbul on May 28 wearing a black motorcycle leather jacket and lace-up combat boots, two days before a sold-out stadium show that organizers say could shatter the world record for single-concert attendance.
The May 30 performance at Ataturk Olympic Stadium is the opening night of West's first European tour in 11 years, and it arrives at one of the most fraught moments of his career. Concerts in the United Kingdom, France, Poland, and Switzerland have been cancelled or blocked in recent months over the rapper's history of antisemitic statements, leaving Istanbul, a city that straddles Europe and Asia, as the tour's unlikely launchpad.
Organizers at ILS Vision are targeting an audience of up to 120,000, which would surpass the current benchmark for a single concert of 98,000. With 75,000 tickets already sold, international fans are traveling from Russia, Kazakhstan, the UK, Germany, the United States, and Poland to attend the festival-style event, according to organizer Erdem Karahan. The concert is billed as "YE Live in Türkiye" and is jointly organized by ILS Vision and TemaCC.
The production scale is equally ambitious. A globe-shaped stage built from approximately 40 truckloads of equipment and assembled over 10 days will anchor the night, flanked by a 360-degree sound system, drone shows, and laser displays.
A festival area outside the stadium, with space for an additional 30,000 people, will host supporting sets. Turkish artists Sena Sener, Motive, Yener Cevik, Mavi, Pera, and Lvbel C5 are among the supporting acts. Gates open at 3 p.m., with West's headlining set scheduled for 9 p.m.
Karahan described the Istanbul stop as more than a tour date. "On the night of May 30, we are preparing not only a concert in Istanbul but a festival experience where music lovers can come together," he said.
He noted that European stadium capacities typically range from 40,000 to 50,000 seats, while Ataturk Olympic Stadium's scale creates what he called "new record potential" for the artist. American rapper Travis Scott is expected to appear as a surprise guest and perform the pair's collaborative track "Father," though Karahan said no formal confirmation had yet been issued. West's daughter is also reported to be part of the program.
Istanbul's Metropolitan Municipality has deployed around 100 free buses and extended metro services through dawn to manage anticipated crowds. Alcohol will not be served at the venue.
The Istanbul concert proceeds against a backdrop of mounting opposition across the continent. The UK Home Office withdrew West's electronic travel authorization in April, citing that his presence would not be "conducive to the public good," forcing the cancellation of the three-night Wireless Festival in London, where he had been booked to headline every night. Festival organizer Festival Republic confirmed the cancellation in a statement, saying refunds would be issued to all ticket holders.
Concerts in France, Poland, and Switzerland were also called off, with Polish Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska arguing that West's record of offensive remarks should bar him from a nation "scarred by the history of the Holocaust."
West's controversies stretch back to a series of social media posts in 2022 that prompted Adidas and Balenciaga to sever ties with him. In May 2025 he released a song titled "Heil Hitler" and sold swastika-printed T-shirts through his website. Australia denied him a visa, and Brazilian authorities said he would face immediate arrest on arrival.
In January 2026, West published a full-page apology in the Wall Street Journal, saying "I am not a Nazi or an antisemite" and attributing his behavior to a manic episode caused by bipolar disorder.
Despite those bans, West retains confirmed dates in the Netherlands on June 6 and 8, Albania's capital Tirana on July 11, and Prague on July 25, with Dutch migration minister Bart van den Brink stating that no legal grounds currently exist for an entry ban.
Karahan estimated that foreign visitors attending the concert could generate between $50 million and $100 million in ancillary revenue through accommodation, transportation, and food and beverage spending. The projection has not been independently verified and remains an organizer's estimate.
The Istanbul date also marks the first time West has performed in Türkiye. It opens what organizers have framed as a landmark night for the country's live music industry, with the city having cultivated an increasingly ambitious international concert calendar in recent years, adding stadium-scale events alongside established festivals such as the Istanbul Music Festival and Istanbul Jazz Festival.
