Indonesian authorities have released 20 sea turtles into the ocean off Bali after rescuing 22 from an abandoned boat suspected of being involved in illegal wildlife trafficking.
Indonesian authorities found the abandoned boat near Serangan Island, following reports of suspected illegal wildlife trafficking.
The operation began when local residents alerted police to possible sea turtle smuggling in the area, prompting marine officers to investigate the reports.
Officers subsequently found the vessel off Serangan Island, near Bali, and recovered all 22 turtles alive.
Following the rescue, the turtles were taken to a conservation center, where officials assessed their condition.
Authorities said 20 of the animals were released back into the ocean off Bali, while the remaining two are still receiving medical treatment at the center.
Sea turtles have been protected under Indonesian law since 1990, making their commercial trade illegal.
The discovery of the abandoned boat followed a tip-off from local residents about suspected smuggling activity, although authorities did not provide further details about those responsible.
