A 77-year-old British woman who had experienced vision loss due to an eye condition has regained her sight after undergoing successful surgery at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital in Türkiye.

Caroline Edith, a resident of London, sought medical care at several hospitals in the United Kingdom but received differing diagnoses. She was also warned that surgical intervention could result in the loss of her eye, leading her to consider treatment options abroad.

Decision to seek treatment abroad

Following the medical uncertainty she encountered in the U.K., Edith chose to travel to Türkiye upon the recommendation of a physician familiar with the hospital.

She applied to Ankara Bilkent City Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

After comprehensive examinations at the hospital’s Eye Diseases Clinic, specialists determined that while Edith had a corneal condition, an immediate corneal transplant was not required.

The surgical procedure was performed by preserving the sensitive cells of the eye, resulting in a marked improvement in Edith’s vision.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Edith said she was satisfied with the outcome and relieved by the results.

“I can see colors and light again. Everything looks brighter,” she said.

Prof. Dr. Ozlem Evren Kemer, Educational and Administrative Head of the Eye Diseases Clinic, said the patient’s case was complicated by inconsistent diagnoses in the U.K. She noted that the clinic’s extensive experience in corneal procedures played a key role in the successful outcome.

Kemer added that the patient will be monitored remotely and expressed interest in returning to the hospital for surgery on her other eye.
