The European Union has stated that the risk of Ebola reaching Europe remains “very low,” despite the World Health Organization’s declaration of an international health emergency over an outbreak in Central Africa.
European Commission spokesperson Eva Hrncirova confirmed on Wednesday that there is no current evidence suggesting the need for additional measures for the public in Europe beyond standard health precautions. She noted that although infectious diseases are not confined by national borders, the situation within the EU does not indicate an immediate public health threat.
The announcement follows the declaration by the World Health Organization of an international health emergency due to an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where more than 130 fatalities have been reported.
In response, the European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting containment efforts in the affected region. The assistance features a humanitarian air bridge to transport essential supplies, including medical equipment, protective gear, infection-control materials, and temporary shelters.
