The flamingo population at Gaziantep Wildlife Park has grown from 20 about 10 years ago to 52 today. Gaziantep Wildlife Park ranks as Türkiye's largest zoo by area and species diversity, and among the world's few standout zoos.
Alongside its species diversity, the park has also drawn attention for its breeding success, with 4 flamingo chicks born on Flamingo Island.
Celal Ozsoyler, head of the Metropolitan Municipality's Wildlife Conservation Department, told Anadolu Agency (AA) the park ranks as Türkiye's largest, Europe's third-largest and the world's fourth-largest wildlife park.
Ozsoyler said the park hosts 8,000 animals from 380 species. "Our park is home to Flamingo Island, the only place in Turkiye where flamingo chicks are born.
We had chicks last year, and again this year. This year we had 4 chicks. The mothers care for the chicks, and incubation lasts between 27 and 30 days," he said.
Ozsoyler added, "The animals have really adapted to their environment here, feeling as if it's their native habitat. We feed them a balanced diet in particular. When an animal is well-fed and feels at peace here, it breeds. We're proud to be the only park in Türkiye where flamingos have chicks."
Noting that the park hasn't even changed the animals' caretakers in order to avoid disturbing them, Ozsoyler added that visitors who see the flamingo chicks are delighted, with the birds drawing particular interest from children.
