French authorities on Wednesday confined more than 1,700 passengers and crew members aboard a cruise ship docked in Bordeaux following the death of a passenger during a suspected norovirus outbreak, health officials said.
The vessel, Ambition, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, arrived at the western French port on Tuesday carrying 1,233 passengers, the majority of whom were British or Irish nationals.
According to regional health authorities, a 90-year-old passenger died on board, while approximately 50 passengers and crew reported symptoms associated with norovirus, a highly contagious form of gastroenteritis that causes vomiting and diarrhoea.
Health officials placed the ship under close monitoring and implemented containment measures to prevent further spread of the virus. Medical teams also carried out sanitation procedures aboard the vessel.
The Ambition departed from the Shetland Islands on May 6 and made scheduled stops in Belfast, Liverpool and the French port city of Brest before arriving in Bordeaux. The ship was due to continue its voyage to Spain.
