From manti to haydari: 5 Turkish classics among TasteAtlas' best yogurt dishes

Gastronomy platform TasteAtlas has published its list of the world’s best yogurt-based dishes. The ranking featured traditional recipes from many countries, ranging from Türkiye and Iran to Greece and India. Five dishes from Turkish cuisine were included on the list.

Featuring not only main courses but also appetizers and sauces.

According to the ranking, Lebanon’s Shishbarak was selected as the best yogurt-based dish in the world. The traditional meal consists of small meat-filled dumplings cooked in a creamy yogurt sauce flavored with garlic, mint, and spices. 

Known for its comforting taste and smooth texture, Shishbarak is considered one of the signature dishes of Levantine cuisine.

Cokertme Kebab ranked second overall. Originating from the Bodrum region, it is prepared with crispy fried potato strips, tender beef slices, tomato sauce, and a generous layer of garlic yogurt. 

The combination of hot meat and cool yogurt makes it one of the most distinctive Turkish kebab dishes.

Manti placed fifth in the ranking. These small dumplings are filled with spiced minced meat and served with garlic yogurt and melted butter infused with paprika or mint. Often described as Türkiye’s answer to ravioli, Manti is one of the country’s most iconic comfort foods.

Sis Tavuk came in at ninth place. The dish is made by marinating chicken in yogurt and spices before grilling it on skewers. The yogurt marinade helps tenderize the meat while adding a rich and creamy flavor.

Haydari was ranked twelfth. Made with thick strained yogurt, garlic, herbs and sometimes white cheese, it is typically served as a cold appetizer alongside grilled meats and fresh bread.

Cilbir finished the Turkish entries at fourteenth place. This Ottoman-era dish features poached eggs served over garlic-infused yogurt, topped with hot butter and chili flakes. Despite its simple ingredients, it is known for its rich flavor and long culinary history.
